High risk means nothing to them, and it’s my job to share how their risk, without saying that word, actually can impact their overall disease. So instead of using a label, I share, “If you have diabetes and your blood sugars are not under control, it increases your chance of pneumonia, flu, shingles, any of those things.”^8-10

Intertwined in that discussion about preventing complications is also the discussion about vaccines, because if someone gets a respiratory illness or shingles, that infection can spark high blood sugars and make it very difficult to manage that and potentially recover.^11,12

The patients many times tell me, “Oh, what’s the point? I took XYZ vaccine last year, and I still got XYZ.”

And I’m like, “Have you considered that you did not go into the hospital or you were not on the ventilator?”

Immunity fades with time, and our risk changes with age, and a lot of people just don’t realize that their risk is increasing for certain diseases as they get older, and it’s just part of good preventative care.^1,10,13-17

There are lots of vaccine-preventable diseases that could have been prevented had the patient only had a conversation with their family physician, their endocrinologist, their cardiologist, their pulmonologist.¹⁸ It’s really important to talk about that point of prevention because we know that adults are susceptible and that vaccines aren’t just for kids.¹⁹
