Everyone here has an important role in making sure that their patients get vaccinated.

Dr Kuria

As physicians, we need to be visible. If we are not being visible, our patients are going to get their vaccine information somewhere else and it may be misinformation.

Dr Bayo

Yeah, I think some patients have this notion that, “I’m healthy and I don’t need to prevent anything because if I feel fine, I must be fine.”

Dr Dodell

The time that we have with patients is short and limited, so a lot of what I do is educating patients on preventing complications.

Dr Shah

Especially with your at-risk patients, right?

Dr Gupta

Definitely. I talk about flu, pneumonia, RSV, COVID, and increasingly shingles because of immunocompromised population, which I see.^1-5

Dr Siwak

Yeah. Absolutely. I mean, they could be on 10 medicines and if they feel good, they don’t consider themselves high risk.

Where’s that coming from?

Dr Madison

The biggest challenge is the mis- and disinformation online.

Dr Kuria

Sometimes it really is just vaccine literacy and going over all the myths that they’ve heard, not calling them myths, but really show that I am recommending this as I would for myself and all of my loved ones.

Dr Dodell

It’s not like it was before. Just like an automatic, “You should do these things,” and the patient just kind of did them.

Dr Madison

We need to listen to our patients and listen to what they want, what their why is, to contextualize things in a way that makes people want to hear you.

Dr Dodell

The best way to use our voice is to let the patient have their voice and really being non-judgmental about the things they’re hearing and seeing.

Dr Kuria

I usually start with an open-ended question to kind of gauge where are they in vaccine literacy, what are their emotions and feelings towards it?

Dr Siwak

And sometimes you can’t push too hard. If they say, “No thanks,” that’s not the end of the conversation.

Dr Bayo

Collaboration is key. I tell my patients they are their chief medical officer—they are, of their own health. And when you give it a title, you give agency behind the decision-making.

Dr Dodell

This is an area where we can be part of, like, a preventive team because vaccines really tie every organ system together. This is a whole-body recommendation.

Dr Madison

The thing that makes me hopeful is having that rapport with my colleagues where I truly feel like we can work together.
