Can you explain some of the downstream effects of an RSV diagnosis?

Dr Gupta
We have had patients who were doing well but then suddenly got this infection.⁸ And they ended up with having pneumonia, infection of the lung, ended up being hospitalized, some ended up being intubated. Either patients recover or, if they don’t recover, sometimes they don’t make it out of the hospital.^9-12

Dr Kuria
During influenza season, I’ve seen the worst. I’ve seen the CHF patient that is so sick, that is unvaccinated.¹³

I got really sick with the flu. I didn’t know it was the flu until I went to the hospital. And then a couple of days later, I found out that I had pneumonia, pericarditis, and myocarditis, and they were brought on by the flu virus.^14,15

On Screen Text: RSV is a common, contagious, and potentially serious respiratory virus. While RSV typically causes mild symptoms and can last up to 2 weeks, it can be severe for certain adults.^18,19

Dr Gupta
We see patients with chronic lung diseases, advanced lung diseases, either pre-transplant or post-transplant patients, they don’t just get minor illness from these viruses like RSV. They sometimes can end up with very significant disease.^7,11,16

My RSV experience was horrible, and I had to do 2 trips to the ER to try to get my oxygen levels back to where they could.¹⁷ I don’t even know what my O₂ levels were, but it was honestly the worst experience of my life.

Dr Shah
How do you position your patient’s comorbidity in your conversations?

Dr Kuria
RSV puts a lot of my patients into a CHF exacerbation. And I see this over and over. I explain to them, “Your reserve is low. Now your oxygen delivery is low and that’s throwing you into a CHF exacerbation.” And so I prioritize RSV the most for those patients.^13,20,21

Dr Madison
Yeah, I definitely consider RSV a priority vaccine. It’s readily available. It’s definitely a shift that we’re seeing this prioritization within the adult patient population. RSV was once thought to only impact very young babies but we’re seeing this deluge of multiple respiratory infections at one time.^3,22-25

Tash
Vaccination is like a safety net. It’s a precautionary action that I can take.²⁶
