It’s kind of hearing them first rather than pushing them. Pushing never helps. And obviously that’s true in all aspects of life.¹

I would agree with that too. The autonomy is really important. People are worried about losing that.^1,2 And I’ll ask an open-ended question like, “Why?” or “Can you tell me why not?” or “What is your concern?” Because the concerns are all different.

It’s who’s in front of me and how can I make it prescriptive, in tune to your life? And I need to back up why I’m saying that it’s important to you.

Dr Kuria
That’s basically what we have to do because the only other voice is going to be something that’s external. And so, keeping the conversation very open-ended, open-minded, and understanding where they’re at and why they are so hesitant.

Dr Bayo
And I want to add on to that. So, instead of going in and saying, “Okay, which vaccines are you due for?” I flip it. And I share, “Okay, we have this disease. I want to share with you some of the complications that I’ve been seeing trending that have been happening.” “And, did you know that there is a vaccine that can help prevent that?”

Dr Gupta
I make it very clear in my clinic that, “We are doing this for you and I’m only giving suggestions and recommendations. It is your body. You have to choose, but I am here to help you choose.”

On Screen Text: Patients want to feel in control of their health²

Dr Bayo
Sometimes prevention doesn’t happen in our patients’ minds until someone close to them ends up with an illness. And so that’s where we just have to continue to talk about the impact of it and how it can make a difference in their life.^3,4

Dr Siwak
I think the repetition is really important. It’s very common that when a patient will come back to see me, they’ll say, “My cardiologist wants me to have this. My nephrologist wants me to have this.” And so, every wellness visit, especially the Medicare wellness visits, we’re talking about vaccines. In the fall, we’re talking about flu and RSV and pneumococcal disease because they’re just more prevalent.^5-7

Dr Madison
I am all about repetition. Now they’re seeing and hearing the same message over and over again. And maybe they didn’t get vaccinated this time, but maybe they get vaccinated the next time.

Dr Bayo
I often share it takes 5 to 7 times for people to comprehend and take in information. So, if you share it one way, you share it, and eventually it lands for that patient. And so, having all of us kind of work together, it’s huge.
